NRPUP MAKES STRONG GAINS AS PRELIMINARY PARLIAMENTARY TALLIES EMERGE
The National Restoration Party and United Progress Party (NRPUP) is emerging as a major contender in several parliamentary constituencies, according to preliminary and unverified tallies circulating following Thursday’s General Election.
The figures, which are yet to be formally confirmed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), indicate that NRPUP has secured or is leading in a number of constituencies across the country, including key urban and Copperbelt seats.
Among the constituencies listed as NRPUP victories are Nchanga, Chimwemwe, Kabushi, Mandevu, Kabwata, Kanchibiya, Lima, Mafinga, Chipangali, Wusakile, Kasama Central, Chifunabuli North, Chingola Central, Mwenzo, Imbwili, Mpulungu, Chifubu, Ndola Central, Bahati, Chambishi and Kalulushi.
The reported NRPUP victories include notable political contests involving prominent figures. In Mandevu, former minister Jean Kapata is reported to have won, while Dan Yenga is listed as the winner in Kabwata.
The preliminary figures also suggest setbacks for some sitting or prominent UPND figures, including Andrew Lubusha in Chipangali, Sibongile Mwamba in Kasama Central and Frank Tayali in Ndola Central.
Other notable results being reported include Elvis Nkandu in Kaputa, Iris Kaingu in Mwandi and Iron Garry in Mazabuka Central, while former minister Silvia Masebo is reported to have lost in Chongwe East.
UPND ALSO RECORDS SIGNIFICANT WINS
Meanwhile, UPND is also recording a number of parliamentary victories across the country.
Among the candidates reported to be leading or winning for the ruling party are Wesley Mulwanda in Mweru, Peter Kapala in Chifunabuli North, Favorite Musangu in Chiengi, Mubita C. Nawa in Mongu East, Jairos Simbeye in Nkombwa-Isoka, Wedden Chileshe in Mporokoso and Romeo Kangombe in Sesheke East.
Other reported UPND winners include Sibote Sibote in Nalikwanda, Fredrick Misebezi in Sesheke West, Makozo Chikote in Luampa East, Kaliye Mandandi in Sioma, Kahale Kahale in Lukulu North, Beauty Moola in Shangombo North and Makai Makai in Mongu Central.
In Eastern Province, the party is reported to have secured seats through candidates including Moses Moyo in Luangeni, George Mwanza in Chipata Central and Emmanuel Kasambo in Mpongwe East, while Patrick Mucheleka is reported to have won in Luwingu Central.
In Lusaka Province, Obvious Mwaliteta and Buumba Malambo are among those reported to have won in Kafue East and Kafue respectively.
The emerging results point to a highly competitive parliamentary election, with both the ruling UPND and opposition parties making gains in different parts of the country.
However, these figures remain preliminary and should not be treated as official results until announced by the ECZ. The commission is responsible for the official verification and declaration of parliamentary and presidential election results.
The 2026 election is also the first general election held under the new electoral framework that provides for 226 constituency-based National Assembly seats, alongside proportional-representation seats.
As verification and announcements continue, the final parliamentary composition will become clearer, including whether the reported NRPUP gains translate into a significant increase in opposition representation in the National Assembly.
