Nevers Mumba Endorses President Hichilema Amidst Controversy

Nevers Mumba, leader of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD), announced his support for President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election bid today, effectively ruling himself out as a presidential candidate for the 2026 elections. This decision has sparked controversy, with many questioning Mumba’s sincerity and motives.

Mumba’s journey into politics began when he founded the National Christian Coalition in 1997, a Christian political movement that later became a registered party in 1998. He had initially dismissed the idea of entering politics, stating that it would be a “demotion” from his role as a respected pastor. However, his experience working with President Frederick Chiluba’s government, which he later criticized for corruption, led him to change his stance.

As a pastor, Mumba was a household name in Zambia, known for his charismatic preaching and influence within the Pentecostal movement. His yearly Victory conferences attracted international speakers and large crowds. However, his decision to challenge Chiluba’s government’s corruption led to a significant backlash.

In 2018, Mumba faced legal troubles when he was convicted of abuse of authority, he was found guilty by the Ndola High Court. In another count he was convicted for a corruption case.

Mumba’s entry into politics was marked by his participation in the 2001 Zambia general election, where he emerged fifth out of 11 candidates. He later served as Zambia’s eighth vice-president under Levy Mwanawasa from 2003 to 2004 but was fired due to insubordination.

Critics argue that Mumba’s support for President Hichilema is driven by personal benefits, including his son’s appointment to the foreign service. This perceived transactional loyalty has raised concerns about Mumba’s commitment to principle-based leadership.

Many question Nevers loyalty to President Hichilema,  critics argue that Mumba’s support for the President is driven by personal benefits. Mumba was fired due to insubordination, this  raises concerns about his ability to work with others.

By endorsing President Hichilema, Mumba has essentially abandoned his own presidential ambitions, a move that has sparked intense debate among Zambians. As the country gears up for the 2026 general elections, Mumba’s decision will undoubtedly have significant implications for the political landscape.
