NDOLA WOMAN LOSES 12-YEAR-OLD MARRIAGE OVER LATE-COMING

Returning home late has cost a woman of Ndola her 12-year-old marriage. Maloni Chanda, 40, dragged his wife Ruth Kabomba, 34, to court for divorce accusing her of being in the habit of returning home as late as 23:00 hours.

Chanda said his wife’s behaviour was causing disputes in their marriage. “One time, I saw my wife being dropped off by a man at 23:00 hours,” he said.

Chanda told Ndola Main Local Court that he married Kabomba in 2012 after she fell pregnant with their first child. Chanda was charged K5,000 for damage but only paid a sum of K30 as dowry.

He was giving evidence before local court presiding magistrate Elizabeth Banda. Chanda told the court that problems in their marriage started when Kabomba started returning home late and continued doing so even after being counselled by elders.

But Kabomba denied the allegations and told the court that it was Chanda who was fond of arriving home late. She said her husband did not trust her and this was causing problems in their marriage.

Passing judgment, the court upheld the claim and granted divorce with no compensation. The court observed that the couple did not undergo premarital counselling and as such, did not know how to live, as husband and wife.

Chanda was ordered to be giving K600 to Kabomba as monthly support for the children and ensure that all their basic needs are provided.
