Brian Mundubile of Zambia and Tundu Lissu of Tanzania are now being discussed in connection with the 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the European Parliament’s major human-rights award.
The reported nomination of Brian Mundubile comes at a critical moment in Zambia’s political history, while Tundu Lissu, Tanzania’s opposition leader and CHADEMA president, has been formally nominated by the European People’s Party group for the 2026 Sakharov Prize.
For Zambia, Mundubile’s name being associated with an international human-rights award would inevitably bring greater scrutiny to the political circumstances surrounding him, his supporters and the broader opposition.
