MOTORBIKE ACCIDENT KILL 42 IN NAKONDE IN TWO YEARS
Motorbike accidents have killed 42 people and injured more than 100 in Nakonde district in the last two years.
The police service reported 18 accidents in 2022, with 25 fatalities, and 12 accidents in 2023, with 17 fatalities.
A meeting at Central Park on Wednesday morning addressed this issue. It brought together motorbike owners and riders, as well as officials from the local authority, the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), and the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).
The police service also said that traffic offences by motorbike riders had resulted in over one million Kwacha in fines.
Nakonde District Officer Commanding Silvester Kabaso has warned the riders against overloading, speeding, and drunk riding, which he says caused most of the accidents.
He has advised the riders to obey the traffic rules and regulations, and to wear safety gear such as helmets and reflective jackets.
The stakeholders agreed to work together to ensure the safety of the motorbike riders and other road users, and to reduce the number of accidents and deaths.
