MINISTER’S STATEMENT ANGERS OPPOSITION

OPPOSITION Citizens First-CF has expressed discomfort with the statement by the Minister of Agriculture Reuben Phiri that farmers who do not sale maize to the Food Reserves Agency – FRA risk being removed from the Farmer Input Support Program – FISP.

National Chair Lady Faith Munthali says her party is saddened with the suggestions that government will blacklist FISP farmers who will not sale their maize to the Food Reserve Agency.

She charged that Government has changed its position stating that the country has enough food in reserve.

Munthali has challenged the Minister of Agriculture to tell the nation what happened to the food in reserve when he assured the nation that no citizen will go hungry.

She has assured the nation that the Citizens First Party will come up with reasonable policies that will ensure that the country is food secure at all times.

This follows a Statement by the Minister of Agriculture Reuben Phiri last week noting that those who will not comply with guidelines will be removed from FISP and will not be eligible to access support under the Agriculture Credit Window.

He said terms under FISP and the Agriculture Credit Window have a binding clause that requires farmers to supply their Maize to FRA.
