MAYA MWANAWASA BECOMES THE FIRST ZAMBIAN TO EVER COMPLETE MARATHON RUNNING’S SIX MAJORS
In marathon running, there are hundreds of marathons organized every year, but only six marathons have the title of World Marathon Major and they are held in six cities. These marathons are Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, London Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Chicago Marathon and New York City Marathon. These marathons are some of the most prestigious and sought-after in the world and entry into most of these events is very difficult.
In 2016, Abbott World Majors, the organization that runs the majors introduced what is called the Six Star Medal to award those that complete all the six majors. Since then, completing the majors became a highly coveted accolade in the world of running.
By crossing the finish line at her sixth major (The Boston Marathon), Maya Mwanawasa has become the first Zambian to ever complete the majors and earn the Six Star Medal.
For Maya, this accomplishment symbolizes the culmination of years of training, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment. In 2018, she triumphed in her first two Abbott World Major Marathons: the Berlin and Chicago marathons. In 2019, she continued her success by conquering the London and New York marathons. Maya resumed her journey in 2023, triumphing in the Tokyo Marathon.
Upon completing the Boston Marathon today, she wrote; “Dare to dream! A long journey and dream has been realized in Boston today! I am a Six star finisher! The first ever six star finisher from my country Zambia! ! Thank you for all your support! Today I soaked it all in and even if Boston showed me some flames, I would not have wanted it any other way!”
