Matambo takes own life after discovering wife has two-month-old baby

A 40-YEAR-OLD teacher of Gwembe District in Southern Province has been found dead, days after returning from Choma where he had travelled in an attempt to reconcile with his estranged wife, only to allegedly discover that she had a two-month-old baby fathered by another man.

The deceased has been identified as Elimon Matambo, who is suspected to have taken his own life on July 27, 2026, at his elder brother’s residence in Munyumbwe Township.

Confirming the incident to TV Yatu, Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo said that on July 25, 2026, at around 09:00 hours, Matambo left his motorcycle at the residence of his elder brother, Victor Matambo, before travelling to Choma in an effort to reconcile with his wife and bring her, together with their six-year-old son, back home.

According to Namalongo, the following day at around 19:00 hours, Matambo returned to his brother’s residence accompanied by his son.

He reportedly told his brother that his reconciliation efforts had failed after he discovered that his estranged wife had a two-month-old baby allegedly fathered by another man.

His brother reportedly observed that Matambo was visibly distressed and advised him to spend the night at the house so that he could receive counselling. He agreed and retired to sleep in the sitting room at around 20:00 hours.

Namalongo said that on July 27, 2026, at around 07:00 hours, the deceased’s 17-year-old nephew entered the sitting room and found his uncle lying on the floor with a leather belt tightly tied around his neck.

The teenager immediately alerted his father, who rushed to the room and, after finding Matambo unresponsive, reported the matter to the police.

Police officers visited the scene and conducted a physical inspection of the body. No visible injuries were observed.

Namalongo said preliminary observations suggest that the deceased may have suspended himself on a roof pole before falling to the ground.

The body was later transported to Gwembe District Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
