Man allegedly killed after dispute over beer payment in Lusaka
A 24-year-old man has died after he was allegedly chased and beaten by several people following a dispute over the payment for beer in Lusaka’s Garden House Compound, police have said.
Lusaka, 5 July – The victim, identified as Tackson Hanene, is reported to have been attacked on Saturday evening after finishing work in the Light Industrial Area.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said Hanene and a work colleague had stopped at a local drinking place in Garden House Compound, where an argument allegedly broke out over the payment for beer.
According to police, Hanene fled from the premises during the confrontation but was allegedly pursued by the owner of the drinking place and several other people, who assaulted him.
He was later discovered unconscious near Good Life Shop by members of the public. He was rushed to Kanyama Level One Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.
The incident sparked unrest in the area, with some members of the public allegedly looting a shop believed to be connected to the dispute before police officers intervened to restore order.
Police also secured property that remained at the scene, including a Toyota Surf motor vehicle.
A 30-year-old suspect, Simon Siamampande of Garden House Compound, has since been arrested in connection with the alleged murder.
Mr Chilabi said investigations were continuing and that police were pursuing other suspects believed to have been involved in the fatal assault.
