Malema leads EFF March to demand review of Orania’s status.
Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has announced plans for a march on April 22, 2025, to the office of Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul in Kimberley.
The protest aims to push for a review of Orania’s status, with Malema and the EFF arguing that the town’s existence undermines South Africa’s national unity and perpetuates apartheid-era ideologies.
Orania, a predominantly white Afrikaner town located in the Northern Cape, has long been a point of contention due to its promotion of Afrikaner self-determination and ethnic-based policies.
Malema and the EFF contend that Orania’s cultural initiative, which is exclusive to Afrikaners, runs counter to South Africa’s constitutional values of equality and inclusivity, potentially fostering ethnic division in a post-apartheid society.
Malema’s announcement follows failed talks with Orania’s leadership and members of the Freedom Front Plus, a political party that supports Afrikaner interests. The EFF leader has vowed to challenge Orania’s existence, framing it as a symbol of resistance to the ideals of non-racialism and national unity embedded in South Africa’s Constitution.
