Magistrate Court in Mangochi has sentenced musician Abdul-Karim Saidi, popularly known as Bandera, to three years in prison.
The court heard that Bandera, who is 23 years old, kept a 14-year-old girl without her parents’ knowledge while staying with her at a lodge for three days.
The state informed the court that despite the girl’s mother trying to retrieve her, it was not successful until relatives intervened, which eventually led to the girl’s return.
Although Bandera’s lawyer, Patrick Debwe, pleaded for a lighter sentence citing his client’s young age, the state argued that the case was serious and required a strong example to be set.
In delivering the sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Muhammad Chande agreed with the state, saying the punishment is meant to curb the trend of misleading young girls.
