Malawi Launches Voluntary Repatriation from South Africa

The Malawian government has started a voluntary repatriation program for its nationals in South Africa, responding to attacks on migrants amid anti-illegal immigration protests.

Malawi’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the initiative is only for citizens who have requested assistance to return home due to safety concerns.

The program follows weeks of protests and vigilante violence targeting undocumented foreigners, mainly in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban. Similar repatriation efforts have been launched by Ghana and Mozambique.

South African authorities have condemned the violence while noting public anger over crime, unemployment, and illegal immigration. Malawian officials urged citizens to use official diplomatic channels and warned against scams.

Logistical details for returns are expected shortly.j
