Lecce fires manager after he gives opposing player a headbutt

Lecce has terminated the contract of manager Roberto D’Aversa following an altercation where he head-butted an opposing player, Verona striker Thomas Henry, at the conclusion of their recent 1-0 home loss to Hellas Verona over the weekend.

The club issued a statement on Monday, denouncing the incident and confirming D’Aversa’s dismissal.

“After the events that took place at the end of the Lecce – Verona match, U.S. Lecce announces that it has relieved coach Roberto D’Aversa of his duties,” the club said in a statement.

During the match, both D’Aversa and Henry were given red cards.

Following the incident, the manager, who arrived at Lecce in June 2023, issued an apology, stating that his players had been provoked throughout the latter stages of the game.

Lecce has managed to secure victory in only five out of their 28 league matches.

Currently positioned 15th in the league with 25 points, they are just one point above the relegation zone. Verona’s recent win has propelled them to 13th place with 26 points, surpassing Lecce in the standings.
