KET STAKEHOLDERS IN HEALTHCARE SECTOR BACK GOVERNMANT’S DECISION TO TRANSFER NHIMA TO MINISTRY OF HEALTH

Several stakeholders in the healthcare sector and the labor movement have expressed their support for government’s recent decision to transfer the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIMA) from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security back to the Ministry of Health.

Notable stakeholders, including the Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ), Clinic Officers Association, United Federation of Employers in Zambia (UFEZ), and Civil Service Health Partnership, have joined forces to endorse government’s strategic move.

Muyaywa Kabisa, President of FFTUZ, lauded the decision, stating that Ministry of Health is best equipped to oversee NHIMA given its primary responsibility for safeguarding the healthcare interests of all Zambians. Kabisa further commended the Cabinet for making a decision that prioritizes the welfare of citizens.

Humphrey Monde, President of UFEZ, also expressed support for government’s decision, citing potential improvements in critical areas like drug shortages, broken laboratory equipment, and medical supply management. Monde expressed optimism, stating that with Ministry of Health regaining control over NHIMA, positive changes and advancements within the healthcare system are anticipated.

Musonda Kamfwa, Secretary General of the Clinical Officers’ Association of Zambia, highlighted the anticipated benefits arising from the realignment of NHIMA to the Ministry of Health. Kamfwa emphasized improved coordination, collaboration in healthcare management, alignment with health sector priorities, increased efficiency and effectiveness, strengthened policy advocacy, and advancements in decentralization implementation.

The widespread support from these key stakeholders signifies a collective endorsement of government’s decision and showcases their shared belief in the positive outcomes and improvements that can be achieved by returning NHIMA to the supervision of the Ministry of Health. With stakeholders united, the path is set for collaborative efforts to enhance the healthcare system and ensure the well-being of all Zambians.
