HICHILEMA URGED TO FOLLOW LIBERIA’S LEAD ON ASSET DECLARATION
Lusaka… Friday February 14, 2025
President Hakainde Hichilema has come under renewed scrutiny over his administration’s handling of corruption, with critics urging him to emulate Liberian President Joseph Boakai’s decisive action on asset declarations.
In Liberia, President Boakai recently suspended government officials who failed to declare their assets within the required time frame.
He reportedly emphasized that asset declaration was not only a legal obligation but also a crucial step in promoting transparency and restoring public trust in government institutions.
The suspended officials will remain without pay for a month or until they submit their declarations.
Zambia’s Socialist Party (SP) President Fred M’membe has cited Boakai’s actions as an example of strong leadership in the fight against corruption.
He argued that Zambia was facing the opposite situation, alleging that President Hichilema was presiding over what he described as “the most corrupt regime in the country’s history.”

According to Dr M’membe, corruption scandals continue to surface under the current administration, raising concerns about the government’s commitment to fighting graft.
He stated that President Hichilema’s inability to act decisively was because the corruption in government allegedly stemmed from his own business interests.
The opposition leader further called for an investigation into the President’s dealings in key economic sectors such as mining, fuel, fertilizer, insurance, and real estate, among others.
He insisted that without such an inquiry, the government’s anti-corruption campaign would remain ineffective and unconvincing.
Dr M’membe also criticized the reluctance of government officials to declare their assets, stating that it raised suspicions about what they owned before taking office compared to their current holdings.
He asserted that the President’s failure to disclose his own business interests could be a sign of deeper corruption.
