Hichilema Tells Voters to Protect Public Service Jobs

🇿🇲 NEWSDAY | Hichilema Tells Voters to Protect Public Service Jobs

President Hakainde Hichilema has urged Zambians to safeguard thousands of public service jobs created under the UPND, arguing that a change of government could place those positions at risk.

Addressing weekend rallies in Shantumbu, Chilanga and Kafue, Hichilema responded to recent remarks by Tonse Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile concerning civil servants, telling voters their ballot would determine whether recently employed teachers, nurses, doctors and other public workers remained in service.

“Your vote will allow us to protect the civil servants. Did you hear what these young men in the opposition were saying? When they come, they want to fire all the teachers we have employed; they want to fire all the nurses; they want to fire all the doctors,” the President said.

Hichilema said his administration has employed more than 45,000 teachers, over 20,000 health workers, alongside thousands of personnel in the defence and security services since taking office in 2021. He assured those still seeking employment that more opportunities would be created if the UPND secured a second term.

The President also defended the government’s Free Education Policy, saying it has enabled about 2.5 million learners to access education, and warned that the gains made in education, employment and development should be protected through the ballot.

Drawing on Zambia’s recent political history, Hichilema reminded supporters that political dismissals had previously affected sections of the public service, urging voters not to return to what he described as those practices.
