Evidence One
We present witness number one: Gilbert Liswaniso, the current UPND National Youth Chairman.
It started as a joke. “No UPND member will be allowed to stand as an independent MP,” he once said.
At first, it appeared to be a slip of the tongue. But then he repeated the same statement time and again. It became obvious that it wasn’t ordinary politicking.
The idea sounded very strange because it defeated normal democratic practices. Throughout all this, President Hichilema remained silent. As the young Liswaniso slapped democracy in the face, the President said nothing. The question that begged for an answer was: Is President Hichilema in support of this diabolical scheme?
Evidence Two
We invite President Hichilema to the witness stand.
Publicly, President Hichilema said that he called a candidate in Mwandi and asked her to step down so that the only UPND candidate could go unopposed. A President of a democratic nation made such a confession on television, confirming that he was speaking in the same spirit as Liswaniso—that he did not want any competition.
Again, this statement sounded like a slip of the tongue. Did the President really make that call?
Evidence Three
We call Iris Kaingu to the witness stand.
On dates unknown, between April and May, President Hichilema took time off his busy schedule to call Iris Kaingu. It was a private conversation in which the President allegedly offered her a deal. Iris revealed one thing: it is true that the President called her and wanted her to step down so that the UPND candidate could go unopposed.
Evidence Four
Is it true that the President wanted to go unopposed in 2026?
We call Robert Chabinga and Sampa to testify. The two forcefully took away the former ruling party from the late Edgar Lungu. While doing all these things, they enjoyed police and state protection.
Who is in charge of the police and the state? President Hichilema.
This, it is argued, clearly proves that the President wanted to go unopposed in 2026.
Evidence Five
Opposition parties that appeared to be a threat were targeted. Sean Tembo’s political party was reportedly changed into a church at the Registrar of Societies. Fred M’membe’s running mate was taken to court, accused of not having a Grade 12 certificate or its equivalent. FDD was technically prevented from participating in the election.
All the institutions that carried out these actions are controlled by President Hichilema.
Conclusion
If the President went that far, breaking democratic principles, including the provisions of the Constitution, then he will change the term limits and the rules governing elections so that he becomes a life President without competition.
The good news is that his plans failed. Independent candidates have challenged him, meaning the automatic seats he had planned for have not materialized, hence the bitterness. Secondly, he thought he would compete only with himself, but the boys are there.
On 13th August, you and I must go out and vote because if we do not, Zambia could slide back into a one-party state, with a businessman as President.
