GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO UKA’S ANNOUNCEMENT, UNREGISTERED GROUP NOT PERMITTED SAYS MWIIMBU

Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu, has stated that Government has been compelled to act in response to UKA’s announcement of their intention to hold a political rally in Kafue District. Minister Mwiimbu asserts that it would be irresponsible for the Police to authorize the rally since UKA is not registered as a Pressure Group or a Political Party with the Registrar of Societies.

During a press briefing in Lusaka, Minister Mwiimbu clarified that while the organizers are free to convene, the public gathering must not be affiliated with UKA and must comply with the legal requirements. Regarding the registration status of UKA, The Minister referred to official records which indicate that a name search and reservation for a Pressure Group named UKA was carried out on February 13th, 2024, through Sakwiba Sikota. However, on February 14th, 2024, Mr. Sikota verbally requested to change the reservation category from a pressure group to a political party, and was advised to submit a formal application accordingly.

The name reservation expired on March 13th, 2024, following which Mr. Sikota requested an extension. After the expiration, Mr. Sikota was advised to submit an online application as the Department had transitioned to the e-government platform. However, no such application has been made to date.

Mwiimbu appeals to certain opposition political parties to cease accusing government of refusing to register UKA as a Pressure Group or Political Party, as the proper application procedures have been communicated. Additionally, he clarifies that government has not prohibited any registered political party from holding rallies, citing the example of Citizens First, who obtained permission to organize a rally in Chienge District after informing the police about their intentions.

The Government remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring transparent and accountable political processes in the country.
