GOVERNANCE EXPERT RATES PARLIAMENT 6 OUT OF 10
By Respite Kaoma,
Governance expert Wesley Miyanda has rated the performance of the current Parliament at between six and seven out of ten, citing unresolved grey areas and concerns over impartiality in the National Assembly.
Speaking in an interview with Mafken News, Mr. Miyanda said the rating was based on issues observed during the parliamentary term, some of which had already been publicly raised.
He argued that the Speaker of the National Assembly had not remained fully objective and appeared more inclined toward the ruling party instead of maintaining neutrality while presiding over the House.
Mr. Miyanda claimed that most MPs suspended by the Speaker were from the opposition and independent ranks, while ruling party members accused of misconduct were not subjected to similar action.
He further alleged that the Speaker was often quick to reprimand and punish opposition and independent lawmakers.
Mr. Miyanda also cited the recent ruling involving MPs accused of crossing from the opposition to the ruling party, saying the decision raised questions about impartiality and could expose the affected legislators to possible future legal challenges.
