GARRY-MASEBO LEADS RAID ON KACHASU FACTORIES TO PREVENT CHOLERA IN KANYAMA TOWNSHIP

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Garry Nkombo, and his counterpart, the Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo, yesterday led a team of officials from Lusaka City Council and other government ministries to sensitise community members in Kanyama township about measures to prevent cholera.

The sensitisation programme, which was attended by Her Worship the Mayor of Lusaka, Ms. Chilando Chitangala, Kanyama Member of Parliament, Hon. Monty Chinkuli, Ward councillors, Lusaka Acting Town Clerk, Engineer Liftery Ndaba, and Lusaka City Council Director of Public Health, Mr. Victor Kagoli, involved a raid on the brewers of the local beer commonly known as Kachasu.

The team spent time persuading residents, “whose perception was that Kachasu cures cholera”, that this belief was false.

Several Kachasu factories in the area were destroyed by the team, as the activity was illegal and posed a threat to human health.

Nkombo and the team also shut down two markets in the area for three days to allow for cleaning at the markets.
