A GARDENER appeared in court yesterday for allegedly stealing two 25kilogrammes bags of Eagles roller mealie meal worth K378 from ShopRite Stores at Cosmopolitan Mall.

Best Miyoba, 34, who is from Gwembe but works as a gardener in Lusaka, is charged with theft, an offence allegedly committed on January 15 this year.

When he appeared before Lusaka Magistrate Allan Kangwa, Miyoba pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Eunice Malama, 30, a loss control manager at Cosmopolitan ShopRite outlet testified that on the material day, she was at work operating the Closed Circuit Television cameras.

Around 10:25 hours, she spotted a customer leaving the store with two 25 kg bags of Zambia National Service manufactured roller meal in a trolley.

Ms Malama She said immediately she saw that, she stepped out of her office and informed security because she had seen the suspect by passing the tills without paying.

“I found the suspect already with security supervisor Mr Borniface Soko, who then asked Miyoba to produce a receipt for the two bags of mealie meal he carried in the trolley but he failed to do so.

“He claimed that he thought that the tills were outside. Each 50kg bag of mealie meal cost K189.99,” she said. Ms Malama said the issued was reported to Embassy Police for further investigations which led to the arrest of Miyoba. During cross examination, Miyoba told the court that he asked the security guard to show him where the till was so that he pays but Mr Soko refused.

The court also heard that the accused was intercepted about 50 metres away from the Shoprite store.

The matter will resume on March 14 for continued trial.
