ELECT DEPUTY MAYORS, DEPUTY COUNCIL CHAIRS – PS
THE Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has directed Local Authorities across the Country to hold elections for Deputy Mayors and Deputy Council Chairpersons.
The circular issued by Ministry Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu and seen by Byta FM News, addressed to the Office of the Town Clerk and Council Secretaries, states that the tenure of office for the aforementioned officers expires on 15th February, 2024.
Haamaundu has also noted that the tenure of Office for Ward Development Committees will also come to an end on the earlier mentioned date.
He has since instructed that the elections be held by 31st March, 2024.
The statement highlights that the directive is in line with the Local Government Act Number 2 of 2019, which compels Local Authorities to hold elections for the aforementioned Office bearers after two and half years.
