EDITORIAL: SIAVONGA PRIMARIES – NOISE, NO RESULTS, AND A PARTY THAT SAID “CANCELLED
By Siavonga Media Zambia Editorial Team
It’s not over. It never started. That is the only truth Siavonga can hold onto right now.
After what looked like primary elections across all 12 wards, the constituency woke up to a storm: celebration posts, counter-posts, whispers of corruption, and one clear statement from UPND leadership the elections were cancelled.
Today, incumbent MP Hon. Darius Mulunda posted that he “emerged first in 8 out of the 12 wards” and thanked ward officials for their “strong support”. He called for calm as the adoption process continues.
Hours later, aspirant Edith Nakawala Chisanga urged supporters to ignore “over eager factions making up stories on fake news pages”. She said the secretariat in Lusaka will announce the UPND candidate on Wednesday, and that her camp is “in a very strong position”.
Given Kwapu posted only: “just relaxing”. Bwalya Mwape has remained silent. Susan Tembo continues to ask for votes for the “upcoming election”.
UPND Southern Province Chairperson Billiard Makwembo was blunt:
“No official election results were announced yesterday because the elections were cancelled.”
He said National Chairperson for Elections, Likando Mufalari, issued clear instructions to cancel the primaries immediately. The reason: the party directed use of a _ranking system_, not primaries. That directive was ignored.
Mr. Makwembo warned that any official celebrating a “victory” from the cancelled exercise risks disciplinary action. He added that primaries “often create confusion”, citing alleged vote buying as a major concern.
If you check all Siavonga media pages, you’ll notice silence. Here’s why: There is no clear, official information for the public.
Different camps are circulating different “results”. Party officials contacted by our newsroom declined to comment. As _Siavonga Media Zambia_, we refuse to publish information sourced only from candidates — that is how misinformation spreads.
Our duty is to report facts, not factions. And right now, the only verifiable fact is: UPND says the elections were cancelled.
Hon. Mulunda said one thing we agree with: Siavonga needs unity and development. But unity starts with a credible process. If the process was cancelled, respect that. If a ranking system is coming, explain it.
Siavonga Media Zambia will not declare any winner. We will not amplify unverified ward tallies. We will publish the secretariat’s decision the moment it is confirmed by UPND.
It’s not over because, officially, it never began.
