ECZ REVOKES BINWELL MPUNDU’S ACCREDITATION TO NATIONAL RESULTS CENTRE
Lusaka, August 11, 2026 – The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has revoked, with immediate effect, the accreditation granted to Binwell Mpundu to access the National Results Centre, citing concerns over public safety and security.
In a press statement issued Tuesday, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the decision was taken pursuant to Section 77(6) of the Electoral Process Act and Paragraph 11(1)(c) of the Electoral Code of Conduct.
The Commission said the decision follows the circulation of a video on social media attributed to Mpundu, in which he is alleged to have made threats suggesting that he was prepared to kill during the election.
ECZ said it considers statements of that nature a serious concern because of their potential to incite violence, trigger public unrest and undermine the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.
According to the Commission, Mpundu had initially been accredited after being nominated by the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP).
ECZ said the nomination was contained in a letter dated July 30, 2026, submitted by the party’s Secretary General introducing its nominees for accreditation to the National Results Centre.
The Commission has since reminded all electoral stakeholders of their responsibility to remain peaceful and abide by the law, particularly as Zambia heads into the August 13 general elections.
It cautioned stakeholders against issuing statements or threats, or engaging in conduct capable of inciting violence, causing public unrest or compromising public safety and security.
ECZ further warned that it would not hesitate to take lawful action against any accredited individual whose conduct threatens the integrity, security or peaceful conduct of the electoral process.
