UPPZ Leader Claims Electoral Commission Bias Amid Proposed Law Reforms

Charles Chanda, the leader of the United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ), has raised alarm over the electoral law reforms recently proposed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

Chanda specifically criticized the suggestion to extend the announcement period for presidential election results, stating that this could create unnecessary uncertainty and erode public trust in the electoral process.

In a statement , Chanda accused the current ECZ of being essentially a branch of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), claiming that the commission’s structure and leadership favor the interests of the current government.

He argued that the proposed changes are designed to benefit those in power rather than promote a fair electoral process.

In his call for action, Chanda proposed a stakeholders meeting involving political parties, civil society organizations, and electoral experts.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration to ensure that all voices are heard and that the reforms serve the interests of the Zambian populace.

Chanda’s comments come at a critical time as the country prepares for upcoming elections.

By embracing an inclusive dialogue, he believes stakeholders can work towards electoral laws that truly reflect the will of the people.

As the debate continues, many are questioning whether these reforms will bolster or hinder democracy in Zambia.
