COUNCILOR DETAINED FOR THEFT OF 450 BAGS OF MAIZE

TWO people, including a Ward Councilor, have been arrested in relation to theft of relief maize which occurred on January 25, 2024, in Chipata District.

Phillip Bobat Phiri aged 23, a Councilor for Sisinje Ward in Chipangali Constituency, is allegedly responsible for the theft of 450 bags of white maize designated as relief food for vulnerable citizens within his area.

Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, has identified the other suspect as 38-year-old James Sakala residing in Nyakutwa area of Chipata Distract.

Hamoonga explains that the dual has been formally apprehended for their respective roles in the aforementioned theft, with Phiri facing charges related to Theft by Public Servant, while Sakala has been charged with Theft.

He notes that both suspects have been released on Police Bond pending further legal proceedings.

Hamoonga has reiterated the commitment by Zambia Police in ensuring justice and accountability in matters of theft and criminal activities, particularly those involving public servants.
