Can we stop this madness being proposed by ECZ, Binwell appeals to President Hichilema

INDEPENDENT Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu has cautioned that the proposed amendments to Zambia’s electoral process could create serious political tension if they are not handled transparently and inclusively

Speaking on the proposed changes to the Electoral Process Act, Mpundu said the amendments being advanced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) have the potential to cause unrest if they are perceived as manipulative

“What is being proposed in the Electoral Process Amendment may set the stage for trouble,” Mpundu says.

“When you deliberately do imingalato (underhanded dealings), chances are that you may step on things that can lead to trouble,” remarks Mpundu .

The outspoken lawmaker has appealed directly to President Hakainde Hichilema to intervene and halt what he described as a dangerous course of action.

“And I want to appeal to the President of the Republic of Zambia: can we stop this madness being proposed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia,” he says.

Mpundu’s remarks come amid growing debate over proposed electoral reforms, with some opposition figures and civil society organizations expressing concern that certain provisions could undermine public confidence in future elections.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has yet to publicly respond to Mpundu’s criticism.

The proposed amendments are expected to attract increased scrutiny as stakeholders continue consultations ahead of the 2026 general elections.
