Buses and taxi owners project about K4 fare increase following fuel price hike!
The Buses and Taxi Owners Association of Zambia-BTOAZ- estimates that fares could increase by K4 within the next 2 to 3 days following the upward adjustment in fuel prices by the Energy Regulation board-ERB
In an interview with Phoenix News, association National Chairperson Sydney Chewe says the fuel price increase will significantly affect transport operators, as fuel accounts for a major part of their operating costs.
Mr. Chewe says the association is engaging stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transport, to agree on revised fares that will be implemented countrywide.
He says the association will not pass on the full K6 fuel price increase to passengers, as operators have been absorbing part of the increased fuel costs over the past three months.
Mr. Chewe has however called on government to increase fuel reserves as a way of cushioning consumers from the effects of international fuel price fluctuations.
Meanwhile, Commuters Rights Association of Zambia President Aaron Kamuti says the fuel price adjustment will negatively affect commuters, who already consider current transport fares to be too high.
Mr. Kamuti has called for dialogue among stakeholders to determine an appropriate fare adjustment, saying any increase should be carefully considered to avoid placing an additional financial burden on commuters.
The Energy Regulation Board has increased the price of petrol from K25.29 to K31.46 per liter and diesel from K26.86 to K33.27 per liter, effective October 1, 2026.
