Burkina Faso has officially cut all diplomatic ties with France, a decision Officials say takes effect immediately.

Government Spokesperson Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo announced on national television that a thorough assessment showed the essential conditions for bilateral relations such as “Mutual respect and national sovereignty” were no longer being met.

“The government of Burkina Faso hereby informs the national and international community that it has decided to sever diplomatic relations with France with effect from today, June 26, 2026,” the official read out on national television, adding that:

France is “harboring blatant neo-colonial ambitions and providing active support to subversive networks and terrorist groups.”

The French Foreign Ministry has however rejected the accusations, calling the move a “hostile and baseless decision.” French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux stated that:

“The decision illustrates the worrying drift of the Burkinabè authorities. Necessary reciprocal measures are currently under review.”
