PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has locked in a commanding lead in Zambia’s general election, pulling ahead with 1,544,140 votes against Brian Mundubile’s 1,030,662 votes.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, announced these consolidated results at the Mulungushi International Centre just before midnight on August 16, 2026.

This definitive update covers 135 constituencies out of Zambia’s 156 total voting districts.

To overcome this half-million-vote deficit, Mr Mundubile would need to win more than 24,000 net votes per remaining constituencies.

Given the voting patterns across the country, this scenario was statistically improbable.

The numbers demonstrated that the UPND successfully defended its urban strongholds and Copperbelt hubs while expanding its footprint into contested zones.

The atmosphere here at the Mulungushi International Centre was tense as international observers, party agents and media gathered for the late-night briefing.

By delivering a single, massive block of 135 consolidated constituencies, the ECZ effectively anchored public expectations and curbed social media speculation.

Under Zambia’s constitutional framework, a presidential candidate must clear a 50 per cent plus one threshold of the total valid votes to avoid a second-round runoff.

While third-party candidates and rejected ballots were still being factored into the final mathematical equation, President Hichilema’s raw dominant share suggested he was on track to secure an outright first-round victory.

The remaining 21 constituencies were undergoing final verification.

Barring an unprecedented disruption, the official final declaration expected tomorrow, August 17, 2026, would formalise President Hichilema’s second-term mandate.
