Barcelona duo, De Jong and Pedri to be sidelined for weeks following injury during Athletic clash

Barcelona’s medical team conducted tests on Frenkie de Jong and Pedri Gonzalez on Monday morning, following their injuries during the La Liga match against Athletic at San Mamés.

The results revealed that de Jong has a sprained external lateral ligament in his right ankle, while Pedri has an injury to the rectus femoris in his right thigh.

Both players underwent examinations shortly after arriving at the ‘Cules’ training complex.

“De Jong suffers a sprain in the external lateral ligament of the right ankle” and “Pedri has an injury to the rectus femoris of the right thigh” are the words used by the Catalan giants in their statement, published on their social networks.

It is also added that “both are out and their recovery will determine their availability,” so there is no specific or official deadline for Xavi Hernandez to call them up again.

Despite this, it’s been acknowledged that the Dutch player will likely be sidelined for approximately a month. However, precise estimations are challenging due to the lack of specific details provided by the ‘Cule’ club regarding the severity of his sprain.

What’s clear is that he won’t be participating in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Napoli.

Similarly, caution must be exercised with his teammate, who has a history of multiple injuries this season. Remarkably, this marks his eighth injury within a span of two and a half years.
