BANK ACCOUNT FREEZING AMONG INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES

In the lead-up to Zambia’s highly anticipated 2026 general elections, a wave of concern has swept across the political landscape.

Multiple independent candidates, including Bernadette Deka of Chongwe West, have reported frozen bank accounts, raising concerns about electoral fairness and the state of democracy in Zambia.

Transparency International Zambia confirmed that several independent candidates, especially those contesting against the United Party for National Development (UPND), face similar banking restrictions.

This situation indicates a widespread issue rather than isolated cases, alarming both observers and voters. Many perceive these actions as a tactic by President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration to financially suppress political opposition.

For those aspiring to represent their communities outside the main party structures, such actions cast doubt on the government’s commitment to free and fair elections.

The alleged targeting of independent candidates could have lasting repercussions not only on President Hichilema’s legacy but also on Zambia’s broader democratic evolution.
