A RELATIVELY YOUNG POLITICIAN THROWING AWAY HIS CAREER: Andyford Mayele Banda Creates a Political Crisis for Brian Mushimba
There are only two plausible explanations for this latest development: either Brian Mushimba never truly understood who Andyford Mayele Banda was, or he ignored the warning signs.
Long before joining forces with Mushimba, Andyford had already dribbled Dolika Banda. It was therefore only a matter of time before history repeated itself.
The real tragedy, however, is that Mushimba appears to be the biggest casualty of this political drama.
The engineer did not deserve to find himself in such a precarious position because of the actions of his running mate.
My hope is that he regroups, picks up the pieces, and joins the opposition Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance, which has emerged as the UPND’s strongest challenger.
Such a move would place him within a broader political movement that has the potential to reshape the country’s political landscape.
These mingalatos must come to an end.
On the legal front, constitutional experts have argued that the amendments to Article 52(6), introduced through Bill 7, prevent the cancellation of an election merely because a candidate resigns or is disqualified after the close of nominations.
That, however, may not resolve Mushimba’s predicament. While the election itself may proceed, he may not be eligible to remain on the ballot without a running mate. Equally significant is the view that the window for replacing Andyford may already have closed.
If that legal interpretation proves correct, Andyford’s decision will not only have jeopardized his own political future but may also have dealt a devastating blow to Brian Mushimba’s presidential bid.
I feel for Mushimba.
