MPONGWE MAN JAILED 45 YEARS FOR MURDER

A man of Mpongwe district has been sentenced to 45 years imprisonment with hard labour for causing the death of his friend whose father he suspected of intending to marry his wife.

On September 27, 2022, in Mpongwe, Reagan Malupande murdered Justin Moonga using a wooden stick.

According to evidence, on the material day, the two men were attending a wedding ceremony for Junior Manjali at Minkits in Kapitolo village.

It was heard that while at the event, Moonga informed Malupande that his father intended to marry his wife.

“After an exchange of words with him, that is how he beat me on my right eye using a fist and I fell on the ground. Then he picked a wooden stick so that he could hit me, but the stick landed into my hands and I sustained a cut.

“I grabbed the same stick from him and hit him on the head and back, that is how he fell down. Then people apprehended me and took me to Mpongwe Police Station,” Malupande said in his defence.

However, witnesses told the court that when the fight ensued at the market, Malupande was chasing his wife while holding a big stick.

The court heard that when his wife ran to where other people were standing, Moonga pursued him and when Reagan turned back, he heat him with a stick.
