WOMEN DON’T WANT DEMOCRACY, REMOVE TERM LIMIT – NEWLY APPOINTED MP, FLORENCE CHAMA
A fresh constitutional debate has erupted after UPND Proportional Representation Member of Parliament Florence Chileshe Chama suggested that women should support President Hakainde Hichilema remaining in office beyond 2031.
Speaking in a widely circling social media video, Chama said women want development rather than democracy and should back the President beyond the end of his current mandate.
Chama is among the 17 women nominated by the ruling UPND to occupy seats reserved for women under Zambia’s Proportional Representation system.
Her remarks have drawn attention because Zambia’s Constitution limits a President to two elected terms. President Hichilema secured a second term in the August 13th, 2026 General Election, meaning his current term is scheduled to end in 2031.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha says the country should prepare for major constitutional reforms but insists any changes will follow legal procedures and broad public consultation.
Kabesha said government will listen to citizens and elected representatives before determining the direction of any constitutional amendments.
The developments have reignited questions about constitutional term limits, democratic governance and whether development goals and constitutional safeguards can coexist.
