MBALA MAYOR-ELECT DIES
Mbala District in Northern province has been plunged into mourning following the death Mayor-elect Steward Simutenda who died on Wednesday just six days after being elected.
His brother, Gabriel Simutenda told Radio Luswepo that the newly-elected Mayor on the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) ticket had been hospitalised about a week before the elections after falling ill.
Despite his health challenges, Mr Simutenda participated in the election and went on to secure victory.
Before and during the 2021 General Elections, Simutenda served as the Patriotic Front (PF) District Chairperson for Mbala.
Following the 2021 elections, he remained an active opposition voice in the district and was later appointed District Chairperson of the PF before switching to NRPUP .
The sudden death of the mayor-elect has sent shockwaves across Mbala, with residents, political leaders and supporters expected to pay tribute to the late Simutenda.
