UPND alliance member says NRPUP gave ruling party a good run

UPND Alliance member Highvie Hamududu says the newly formed National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) gave the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) a strong challenge in the just-ended general election.

Lusaka, 19 August – Speaking on Phoenix FM’s Let the People Talk programme on Tuesday, Mr Hamududu said NRPUP’s performance was commendable given that the party was formed only about a month before the election campaign period.

He said the party’s ability to mount a serious challenge despite its limited time in existence demonstrated the determination and hard work of its members.

Mr Hamududu urged members of the ruling party to embrace supporters and members of the opposition and work together in the interest of national development.

He also called on political party supporters to avoid fighting over their leaders, saying politicians from opposing parties often maintain cordial relationships despite their political differences.

Mr Hamududu said ordinary supporters should therefore not allow political differences to create unnecessary divisions among citizens.

Meanwhile, governance expert Isaac Mwanza has urged candidates who are dissatisfied with the outcome of the election to seek legal redress rather than encouraging their supporters to take to the streets.

Mr Mwanza said aggrieved candidates should use the courts of law to challenge any electoral disputes, rather than inciting their supporters to engage in protests.

The calls come as political parties and candidates reflect on the outcome of the recently concluded general election, with attention now turning to how political differences can be managed while maintaining peace and stability.
