Hichilema thanks Zambians after election victory
President-elect Hakainde Hichilema has thanked Zambians for entrusting him with another mandate to lead the country, saying the election has demonstrated Zambia’s commitment to peace, democracy and the rule of law.
Lusaka, 18 August – In a message following his victory, Mr Hichilema said he was humbled by the confidence placed in him to serve in the country’s highest office once again.
He said the election had shown the world that Zambia was a peaceful and democratic nation where political differences could be resolved through the ballot box rather than through conflict.
“Thank you, Zambia,” Mr Hichilema said, adding that his campaign had taken him across all 116 districts, including cities, compounds, villages and farming communities.
He said the extensive campaign had given him a first-hand understanding of the challenges facing Zambians and strengthened his resolve to work with citizens to address them.
Mr Hichilema also acknowledged voters who supported his political opponents, saying his administration would continue to work for all Zambians regardless of how they voted.
“To those citizens who preferred the ideas presented by our opponents, we hear you, and we will continue to work for you to ensure that every Zambian benefits from the development we are delivering,” he said.
The president-elect said memories of the children and communities he encountered during the campaign would remain with him as he returned to the task of governing the country.
He pledged to focus on delivering meaningful development across Zambia, saying his administration would devote its energies to progress while promoting unity, cooperation and a shared national purpose.
Mr Hichilema said the election had been hard-fought but that the decision of the electorate must now mark the beginning of a renewed focus on building peace and prosperity.
“The people have spoken and we now turn our focus to building even greater peace and prosperity,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the country under the national motto: “One Zambia, One Nation, One people.”
