HH’S LEGAL ADVISOR CONDEMNS BINWELL MPUNDU’S REMARKS, CALLS FOR ACTION UNDER THE LAW

LEGAL Advisor to President Hakainde Hichilema Senior Counsel Christopher Mundia has condemned remarks attributed to former Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu in a widely circulated video, calling for stern action under applicable laws.
In a statement, the legal advisor said the remarks, in which Mr Mpundu allegedly expressed readiness “to die” and “to kill” in connection with the August 13, 2026 general elections, were deeply disturbing and unacceptable.
The legal advisor described the statements as dangerous rhetoric that could amount to incitement to violence, warning that such language has no place in a democratic society.
“Declaring a readiness to inflict fatal harm over an election undermines the rule of law, breeds fear among citizens, and threatens the peace and stability of the nation,” the statement said.
The legal advisor stressed that electoral contests should be settled through the peaceful exercise of citizens’ right to vote and not through threats, intimidation or violence.
The statement further condemned political violence, inflammatory language and intimidation, calling for swift accountability where the law has been violated.
The legal advisor also urged political leaders and candidates across the political divide to publicly reject violence and inflammatory rhetoric and commit themselves to peaceful participation in the electoral process.
Members of the public, particularly young people, were similarly encouraged not to allow themselves to be drawn into political violence or lawlessness, but instead to exercise their constitutional rights to mobilise and vote peacefully.
“As August 13, 2026 approaches, the preservation of human life, national unity, and democratic integrity must remain paramount. No political ambition or election outcome justifies the loss of life or the incitement of violence against fellow citizens,” the statement said.
The remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of Zambia’s August 13 general elections, with calls growing for all political players and their supporters to maintain peace before, during and after voting.
