A former UPND councillor for Bombwe Ward in Kazungula District, Southern Province has been accused of stealing and selling a Gatoma motorcycle valued at K30,000, which was reportedly donated by President Hakainde Hichilema in 2024 for use in Katombora Constituency before it was later split into two constituencies.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo says the matter was reported by Kazungula North Member of Parliament, Dr. Clement Andeleki, who is standing unopposed in the forthcoming elections.
Mr. Namalongo says the alleged offence is believed to have occurred at an unknown date and time between 2024 and July 2, 2026, in Nyawa Village, Chief Nyawa’s chiefdom, Bombwe Ward in Kazungula District.
In a statement made available to PTV2 News, Mr. Namalongo said Dr. Andeleki received information on July 2 alleging that the motorcycle had been unlawfully taken by the former councillor and later sold to another individual in Bombwe Ward.
He states that on July 5, Dr. Andeleki, accompanied by other UPND officials, visited the suspected buyer to verify the report.
Mr. Namalongo explains that the motorcycle was found in the individual’s possession, and the person claimed to have purchased it from the former councillor, indicating that a letter of sale would be produced to support the transaction.
Mr. Namalongo adds that the motorcycle has since been recovered and is being kept at Kazungula Police Station as an exhibit.
He says no arrests have been made so far, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
