LUSAKA– UPND member Charity Banda has declared that she will dump the ruling party and join the opposition if president Brian Mundubile ascends to the presidency.
Speaking during an interview on ECL Tv program dubbed ” THE EYE OF DEMOCRACY” in lusaka over the weekend, Ms. Banda said she believes the opposition, under the leadership of Mr. Mundubile and Vice President Makebi Zulu, offers a better alternative for Zambia.
“If Brian Mundubile becomes president, I will leave UPND and join my brother Makebi Zulu,” Ms. Banda stated.
“The people are tired. We need leaders who will listen to the grassroots and address the challenges Zambians are facing today.”
Ms. Banda said her decision is based on her desire to see unity among opposition forces ahead of the 2026 general elections. She described Mr. Zulu as “her brother” and praised the working relationship between Mr. Mundubile and other opposition leaders.
She further urged Zambians to look at issues and policies, not party colors, when choosing leaders.
“Politics is not about insults. It’s about who can deliver for the people,” she added.
The remarks have sparked debate on social media, with some UPND supporters criticizing her stance while opposition members welcomed her comments as a sign that more people are open to change.
Ms. Banda has been vocal in recent months about governance and economic issues affecting ordinary citizens.
