MAXWELL CHONGU WITHDRAWS FROM KAFUE WEST PARLIAMENTARY RACE

Lusaka… Saturday June 27, 2026

Kafue West Citizens First (CF) parliamentary candidate Maxwell Chongu has withdrawn from the race ahead of the August general elections.

Mr. Chongu has also resigned as Citizens First National Youth Chairperson and a member of the party’s Central Committee, saying he will soon announce his next political move.

Addressing journalists in Lusaka earlier today, Mr. Chongu described the decision as difficult, noting that he holds Citizens First president Harry Kalaba in high regard.

“I have decided to make this decision after wider consultations. I want to announce to the nation that I have relinquished my position as CF National Youth Chairperson. I have also relinquished my position as a member of the Central Committee of Citizens First. Lastly, I have withdrawn my candidature for Kafue West as Member of Parliament,” Mr. Chongu said.

He dismissed speculation that he had been paid to withdraw from the parliamentary race, stating that his bank accounts have remained frozen by the Drug Enforcement Commission since August 2021.

Mr. Chongu thanked Mr. Kalaba for giving him the opportunity to serve as National Youth Chairperson and as a member of the party’s Central Committee.

“It has been a difficult decision to make because I hold Mr. Kalaba in high esteem,” he said.
