MAJOR ZESCO SUBSTATION EXPLODES LEAVING SEVERAL AREAS IN LUSAKA WITHOUT POWER SUPPLY

By Chileshe Mwango

Rhoespark, Garden, Thornpark, Northmead and parts of Fairview areas have been left without power supply after a major ZESCO substation located in Northmead exploded this morning, leaving all installations completely consumed.

Meanwhile, there was panic among residents and workers within companies located around the substation as the fire was getting out of control.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started when three ZESCO Limited employees were conducting some repair works at the substation when they noticed some sparks and a moment later a huge bang.

Despite being late, the first response by the fire brigade failed to yield any results as the water pump gears on the fire machine failed to engage.

The second fire machine arrived later and was reinforced by the Zambia Airforce-ZAF-.

And some residents living near the substation have disclosed that this is not the first time the substation has experienced a fire and now fear for their lives following this incident.
