Our daughter wouldn’t have died if nurses cared enough, family of woman who died in labour cries
THE family of a 26-year-old woman is demanding answers following the death of their daughter, who died after developing complications during childbirth.
A close relative has alleged that delays in her transfer to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) may have contributed to her death.
The deceased, identified as Mary Moyo, is said to have developed complications after giving birth at Sikanze Hospital.
A close relative claimed that Mary might have survived had she been transferred to UTH sooner after nurses noticed that she was bleeding heavily.
“She gave birth at Sikanze Hospital where she developed complications but they took too long to transfer her to UTH,” the relative said.
According to the relative, Mary lost more than four litres of blood before reaching UTH, leaving medical staff unable to save her.
“She was bleeding heavily at Sikanze Hospital and by the time she got to UTH, she had lost over four litres of blood. They could not save her,” the relative said.
The relative further alleged that when they arrived at UTH, there was no immediate medical attention.
“When they got to UTH, there was no one to attend to them. They were just given a number to call and the person took a long time to arrive,” the relative said.
The incident is reported to have occurred between 21:00 hours on Tuesday and midnight on Wednesday.
Mary was accompanied by her mother at the time.
According to the family, the deceased was the family’s breadwinner and has left behind a husband and three children, including the newborn baby.
“She has left behind a husband and three children. The baby she gave birth to is alive and healthy,” the relative said.
The family also revealed that Mary’s husband developed high blood pressure following her death and has since been hospitalised.
The family suspects negligence and believes that a quicker transfer from Sikanze Hospital and faster medical attention at UTH could have saved her life.
“We suspect negligence because if she had been transferred more quickly from Sikanze Hospital to UTH, she would not have lost so much blood. She might have survived,” the relative said.
The family is now appealing for a full explanation of the circumstances surrounding Mary’s death and is calling on authorities to establish whether proper procedures were followed.
