SAMFYA-BORN GUUS TIL AT THE WORLD CUP

Guus Til has made football history by becoming the first player born in Zambia to participate in a FIFA World Cup.

Born in Samfya, a town in Zambia, Til represented the Netherlands in their commanding 5-1 victory over Sweden, coming off the bench to make his debut on football’s biggest stage.

His presence at the tournament symbolizes a unique connection between two nations with contrasting football legacies.

Til faced a pivotal decision in 2021 when Zambia extended an invitation for him to represent their national team.

Despite his Zambian birth, he elected to play for the Netherlands, the country of his father’s heritage, which boasts a rich footballing tradition and frequent World Cup appearances.

Zambia, on the other hand, has yet to qualify for a World Cup, making Til’s involvement a notable milestone not only for him personally but also for the nation where he was born.

As Til continues his career, his dual heritage and World Cup experience may serve as a bridge, fostering greater recognition of Zambia’s football potential on the global stage.
