THE MYSTERIOUS CHAIR OF PRESIDENT HICHILEMA

Across the country, a curious tradition captivates the public imagination: President Hakainde Hichilema’s habit of carrying his own chair to official events.

Far from a trivial quirk, this ritual inspires wide speculation, with some suggesting it borders on superstition, while others read it as a profound symbol of self-reliance.

What is it about this chair that has captured the nation’s fascination?

This is no ordinary chair.

The chair itself is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, tailor-made from pure wood and polished leather, combining a brown top rail and spindle with intricately finished arms and a black leather seat that gleams with a honeyed luster.

It is not just a masterpiece of furniture but a mobile emblem of the President’s identity.

Added to its allure is the chair’s exclusivity.

It travels only by the most fortified means, an armored vehicle that reflects its importance and perhaps a desire to protect not just the man but the symbolism the chair carries.

Furthermore, the chair is handled solely by the President and his personal bodyguard, underscoring a sacredness surrounding its use.

Surprisingly, it even has its own storehouse, securely guarded under lock and key and kept in the President’s house, emphasising its unique status.

Why does President Hichilema insist on such a ritual?

Though interpretations vary, many see it as a reminder of personal responsibility, a leader literally carrying the weight of his office yet grounded in his roots.

Others believe it is a source of spiritual power capable of repelling negative spiritual energy and bad fortune, as well as ensuring continuity — ideas that lend mystique to the practice.

Like it or not, this chair has travelled more miles, sat in groundbreaking good and bad decision-making meetings, and observed more chapters of Zambia’s present history than most people can imagine.

It symbolizes more than comfort; it is a narrative vessel, carrying deep mystery, and a deep-seated spiritual resonance.

Only President Hichilema and his bodyguard understand what his chair is all about.

To many Zambians, the President’s chair remains a steadfast emblem and mysterious ritual.

It is a chair with a grand story to tell.
