Army soldier shoots girlfriend in head, kills self twice believing she had died
POLICE in Lusaka are investigating a suspected attempted murder case in Kabwata Site and Service after a Zambia Army officer allegedly shot a woman before later taking his own life.
According to Police spokesman Godfrey Chilabi, the incident occurred on the night on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at around 23:00 hours.
He says his officers received a report from a concerned resident that a 40-year-old woman of Kabwata Site and Service had been shot by a man believed to be her acquaintance.
Chilabi says Police preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect had driven the victim to her residence before allegedly shooting her in the forehead using a firearm believed to be a pistol.
Believing he had killed her, the Army Warrant officer reportedly fled the scene immediately.
Police officers who responded to the report found the victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the forehead.
She was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where she was admitted and is currently reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect was later identified as Mwanauta Chansa, a Warrant Officer in the Zambia Army.
Investigations further revealed that after the shooting, Chansa allegedly went to the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Training Centre (KKPTC), commonly known as NANKING, where he is believed to have ingested pesticide in an apparent suicide attempt.
He was subsequently taken to Maina Soko Medical Centre for treatment but reportedly left the facility without authorisation.
Police say he later proceeded to Mtendere Compound, where he allegedly ingested pesticide for a second time.
The suspect was later located and rushed to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
According to police, Chansa was pronounced dead at around 03:00 hours on June 15, 2026, while receiving treatment at the hospital.
His body has since been deposited in the mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events that led to the suspect’s death.
“The Zambia Police Service is working to establish all the facts surrounding the incident, including the circumstances leading to the shooting and the suspect’s death. Further updates will be communicated as investigations progress,” says Chilabi.
