A 42-year-old Zimbabwean truck driver, Edgar Maroto, has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison after being caught with a large consignment of explosives at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

Authorities intercepted his truck during a border operation and discovered thousands of blasting cartridges, detonator fuses and other explosive materials hidden inside the vehicle.

Investigators believe the explosives could have been used for illegal mining activities and other serious crimes.

The court sentenced Maroto to 15 years for unlawful possession of explosives and a further 10 years under organised crime legislation, with part of the sentence running concurrently, resulting in an effective 20-year prison term.

Law enforcement officials have described the conviction as a strong warning to anyone involved in the illegal movement of explosives across South Africa’s borders.
