Iran Threatens SpaceX and Starlink Facilities in the Middle East, Labels Them Military Targets
Iran has issued a direct threat against facilities operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX and its Starlink satellite network in the Middle East, warning that the assets are now considered legitimate military targets.
According to the statement, Iranian officials argue that these systems are used by enemy forces, therefore rendering them subject to potential attack. The warning raises fresh concerns over the escalating role of commercial space and communications infrastructure in regional conflicts.
Starlink, a division of SpaceX, operates a growing constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites providing internet connectivity across the globe, including in conflict zones. The system has previously been activated in war-torn regions to support communications, drawing both praise and criticism from various governments.
Iran’s latest declaration signals a significant shift in how state actors may view private sector assets during hostilities. Military analysts note that threatening commercial satellite infrastructure could set a concerning precedent for the protection of civilian-operated but dual-use technologies.
Political Analyst Sakaria Shikomba weighs in:
“We all know SpaceX and Starlink are used by the United States and other imperialist powers in conflicts. We have seen this clearly in Ukraine. Any nation that dares to allow these spy satellites within its territory must be considered foolish. The world must wake up. These are not neutral commercial assets. They are extension of military intelligence. Nations that host them without scrutiny place their own security at grave risk.”
Neither SpaceX nor the United States government has issued an official response to the threats at the time of reporting.
The situation remains under close observation as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to evolve. The warning from Tehran should serve as a signal to all sovereign nations: commercial satellites can and will be treated as combatants when used for hostile purposes.
