Chipata Diocese bishop George Lungu Has Appealed To President Hakainde Hichilema And The Government To Ensure That Late Former President Edgar Lungu Is Accorded A Dignified Burial, As The Nation Marks One Year Since His Death.
Speaking During A Requiem Mass For Late Paramount Chief Mpezeni, bishop Lungu Said The Church’s Position Is That Closure Should Be Achieved Without Further Delay While The Country Awaits The Judgment Of The South African Supreme Court On The Appeal Concerning The Burial.
He Emphasized The Importance Of According Departed Leaders A Respectful And Timely Burial, Noting That Prolonged Disputes Only Delay The Healing Process For Families And The Nation.
Bishop Lungu Urged All Parties Involved To Prioritize Unity, Reconciliation And Respect For The Deceased As Efforts Continue To Bring The Matter To A Conclusion.
Former President Edgar Lungu Died On June 5, 2025, In South Africa Where He Was Receiving Medical Treatment, But Has Not Yet Been Buried Due To Ongoing Legal Disputes.
Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema Agreed That The Late Former President Should Be Accorded A Dignified Military Burial, Noting That As Commander In Chief Of The Armed Forces, He Deserves Full Honours.
President Hichilema Emphasized That The Burial Of The Sixth Republican President Must Reflect Respect For His Service To The Country And Uphold Zambia’s Traditions Of Honouring Departed Leaders.
